What is bleeding gums?
Bleeding gums is a condition in which the gums become irritated and bleed for various reasons. It is usually caused by gingivitis such as gingivitis; plaque accumulation and poor oral hygiene are the main factors. In addition, systemic diseases, bleeding disorders or some medications can also lead to this picture. As İlkay Dental Clinic, we recommend our patients to consult a physician if there is persistent bleeding, along with regular brushing and flossing.
What are the Symptoms and Types of Bleeding Gums?
The most common symptom of bleeding gums is bleeding while brushing or flossing. In addition, there are symptoms that we can notice visually. If there is recession in the gum line, if the tooth roots are exposed, if the gum color looks dark red and if it is puffy, we need to pay attention.
If we have constant bad breath (halitosis) and experience a bad taste sensation with it, we may have a gum problem. Symptoms are not limited to these. If bleeding occurs immediately when consuming hard foods, this is a warning. And if we ignore all these warnings, the tissues that support the teeth will be damaged. For this reason, the teeth may move along with the feeling of shaking.
If the symptoms mentioned above are present in our valued patients, we are waiting for you to İlkay Dental Clinic to be examined by our specialist physicians.
What Causes Bleeding Gums?
The most common cause of bleeding gums is the accumulation of plaque on the gum line. The presence of plaque on the tooth can lead to a condition called gingivitis. Plaque that is not cleaned and removed regularly hardens into tartar. This tartar can lead to increased bleeding at first and, as it progresses, to a more advanced gum and jawbone disease known as periodontitis.
Bleeding gums can be caused by a number of different medical problems besides the formation of dental plaque.
1.Gingivitis
2.Peridontitis
3.Diabetes
4.Leukemia
5.Thrombocytopenia
6.Vitamin C deficiency
7.Vitamin K deficiency
8.Pregnancy
Gingivitis
Bleeding gums generally indicate gingivitis. This is the most common gum disease. This disease is caused by plaque that accumulates under the gums. Bleeding may occur when brushing your teeth. You can get rid of this condition by brushing your teeth regularly, flossing and using antibacterial mouthwash. And most importantly, see your dentist regularly.
Peridontitis
This disease is also called gum recession or gum disease. This disease damages the soft tissue around the teeth. And without timely intervention, it can destroy the bone that supports the teeth. Gum recession (peridontitis) can lead to loose teeth or tooth loss.
Vitamin C Deficiency
Individuals with vitamin C deficiency in their body may experience bleeding gums in the future. And swelling can be seen in the gums. Taking enough vitamin C supplements during the day can prevent both vitamin C deficiency and scurvy.
Leukemia
Bleeding gums alone does not indicate leukemia, but it can be one of the symptoms of leukemia.
Thrombocytopenia
It is a condition caused by a decrease in the number of platelets, which are responsible for blood clotting. When the number of platelets in the blood decreases, blood clotting becomes difficult and this increases bleeding in the body and prevents the bleeding from stopping. This can lead to bleeding gums that occur while brushing teeth not stopping on their own.
Vitamin K Deficiency
Vitamin K helps the blood to clot properly. And it is very important for bone health. If individuals do not get enough vitamin K, they may experience bleeding problems.
Pregnancy
Hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy can cause the gums to become more sensitive. This often leads to bleeding gums.
Diabetes
Bleeding gums can be a sign of type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Someone with this disease will have a weak immune system and will not be able to adequately fight germs in the mouth. Therefore, they are more likely to get infections such as gum disease. This can make gum disease even worse. Do not forget to see your dentist.
How to Prevent Bleeding Gums?
1.Brush your teeth twice a day with the right technique.
2. Make it a habit to use dental floss regularly.
3.Try gargling with warm salt water.
4. Do not lack vitamins C and K.
5. Stop smoking.
6.Take care to eat a balanced diet.
